Impressions of Violence on TV Make Children Sleep Difficult

Sleep disorders can be triggered by various things, but the child’s most influential TV. Children who have their own TV in his room tends to have more frequent sleep disturbances, especially if you often watch the show of violence.

A study conducted by experts at the Seattle Children’s Research Institute reveal impressions of violence on TV affect sleep patterns in children. The study involved 600 preschool children that is between 3 to 5 years.

During the week, the parent participants were asked to observe her child’s sleep patterns and note if the child is having trouble sleeping. TV viewing habits were also recorded, including length of time spent in front of the TV and the types of impressions viewed.

watc-tvObservations showed that children who have own TV in his room tends to still watch TV after 7pm. In this group, 8 percent of participants experienced sleep disturbances between 5-7 days / week and sleepy during the day.

The number is more than the number of cases of sleep disorders in participants who did not have a TV in his room, where only 1 percent. Most participants who did not have his own TV was asleep and did not watch TV again after 7 pm.

Meanwhile, when viewed kinds of spectacle , sleep disturbances more frequently experienced by participants who watched violent shows at least 1 hour / day. These habits lead to at least one type of sleep disorder in which participants are often sleepy during the day.

Dr. Neena Malik, a psychologist at the University of Miami who was not involved in the study confirmed that the TV can affect sleep patterns of children. Because children can not distinguish between something real with the imaginary, then everything will seem real to him.

"What they see will be very real and it will be very scary for them," said Dr. Malik was quoted as saying by LiveScience, Wednesday (28/06/2011).

Dr. Malik also reminded, sleep disorder risk trigger health problems later when the children grow up. Various studies show that sleep disorders in childhood may increase the risk of obesity and various metabolic disorders such as diabetes.
